The Division: Goat. There's a passage in the Bible that describes people being separated into goats (bad) or sheep (good). I was always afraid that somehow I'd end up a goat. This guy is a little surprised he was culled, but there is hope for him as represented by the blue and silver of the heavens....

About the Artist

Jennifer Vonstein

My work is a response – to a place, to an event, to a person, to an experience. Influences and references to art history, literature and pop culture are conscious and subconscious. My paintings are my way of preserving a particular moment in time or a recollection of a memory.

My work is a story – a personal narrative that reveals itself to you, colored and shaped by your perceptions and intentions. I love to tell tales, because what seems straightforward is usually not and what seems complex is actually quite simple.

My work is a celebration – bold, bright colors and lush, layered texture that revels in the physicality of paint. In other words, I like pushing oil and acrylic paint around a canvas and making interesting marks in an expressive, representational style.

This statement sounds very serious and “artsy,” and seems to be at odds with my colorful paintings (and my personality!) On the surface my paintings are bright and pretty, but there is always something deeper happening. Not that you need to know or even care - I am happiest when someone buys one of my paintings just because they loved it when they saw it. The stories behind my paintings are an added bonus, a secret we can share…if you want to know.
