The Alice Suite by Marianne Sturtridge, 2012-2013 was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. It pays homage to Lewis Carroll and his original illustrator John Tenniel. The work seeks to retain the mystery and magic of the original Alice stories. I created these paintings by continuously reading extracts from the book, making drawings and then reading some more. I feel this kept me in the character of the story while freeing me in my art to delve deeper and deeper into this strange , other world. I used a cork-screw with its winding motion as my model for Alice to symbolise her changing size. I drew a giant fob watch and added London spelt backwards to add to the confusion which Alice felt upon entering "The Doorway to the Garden". There are two heads growing out of the clock, one already had two heads, back and front while the other one appears normal. They are waiting on Alice's next move! Alice is painted orange and stays this colour throughout. I used watercolour and ink drawings on paper with , Letraset, Tipp-Ex and collage from my own paintings.

Please visit me on : I am an art teacher by profession and enjoy the constant challenges of "problem solving" and frustration that goes with art. Teaching art has encouraged me to experiment with new approaches and draw from a history of art knowledge. My paintings seek to convey a range of human feelings from community to alienation, sometimes with a religious, mythological or fantasy theme. While teaching children with physical disabilities I explored themes on attitudes towards disability, illness and censorship. The foundation of my work is drawing, often evolving into mixed media. My painting style ranges from traditional oil and watercolour painting to experimental work in a wide range of materials including computer-based art, bas-relief and ceramics. Alongside painting I have made clay sculptures including torsos and shoes. I use my life drawings as a starting point when making clay torsos and try to capture something of the person in this work.
