I am offering a collection of 4 x paintings on the theme of the Four Elements. Each painting: 150 x 120 cm and Mixed Media on Canvas. From left to right; 'Water', 'Earth' (sold), 'Fire' and 'Air'. This work could be described as a form of Figurative Abstraction; inspired by the natural world and containing recognisable forms from Nature. However the painting, 'Earth' is now sold and in its place, there is the painting, 'Spirit' - available to see from my studio or I can email you a photo, by request. You can also buy these paintings separately. I always have a visual source material that I have seen, experienced, witnessed and made visual notes from. I then have reference points that are 'real', from which to abstract my work. It is very important to my process that my work is anchored in observation, 'reality' and the Natural World. These artworks relate to my interest in Encaustic painting - an ancient technique that uses layers of heated beeswax, to which pigments and mixed media are added. However, the 'Elements' collection of paintings are constructed using Oil, Acrylic and Digital Media. The way of working draws inspiration from the qualities inherent in the Encaustic process. Here, I also aim for a translucent, shimmering quality so that within the finished image the viewer can see or partially see what has gone on before. The multi layers act like windows upon windows. By this process, the artwork transmutes into a mysterious, unknown new entity that is much more than the sum of its parts. Akin to Alchemy, it is a seemingly magical process of transformation. The subject is at once recognisable and yet not quite recognisable; occupying the space of metaphor and yet drawing inspiration from the natural world. In this collection, I am interested in all that is fleeting. Whether the subjects are flickering flames, footsteps in the sand, the vastness of the cosmos or the ever changing appearance of water in Nature; perhaps it is in these elusive spectacles and events that Eternity can be glimpsed. These paintings are hard to photograph. They shimmer and catch the light as I sometimes use iridescent paints. Studio visits (without obligation) are always welcome to my London studio; if you prefer to view paintings in reality. 07951 415699.
