A Homage to the Irish Impressionist Painter Paul Henry (1877-1958). Born in Belfast, Henry went to Paris to continue his studies, meeting many of the Avant-Garde Artists of the day. About the Artist

John De Búrca

Ireland

My work is informed by the natural environment of Ireland and its volatile and temperamental weather patterns which determines the tones and textures of my paintings. I pay particular attention to my research, referring to my plein air sketches and notes in order to construct my composition on the canvas.

I take inspiration from Ireland's History of Traditional and Modernist Painters, together with my interpretations of Celtic Mythology, Folklore, Nostalgia and Edmund Burke's theory writings on the Sublime, to create a contemporary version of Ireland's people and landscapes.

I use a variety of traditional materials in my preparation such as red bole and whiting to prepare the ground on the cotton and linen canvases. I also regularly make my own oil paint from traditional, reliable recipes, sourcing my raw materials from Cornelissen's in Bloomsbury.
