About The Artwork
"The Lost Islands" a 10' Long painting out of Solid Maple This is painting out of wood made from a solid Maple Board. Whenever I stare deeply at wood I often see surf breaks and islands in the grain so I developed a process working with tined resin to enable me to create a painting from a scene I find embedded within a specific board. So I spend a lot of time looking for wood which offers me an interesting topography and than work to bring it to life and explore how these uncharted 'waves in the wood' break. Since the patterns in the wood are the result of water moving through a tree I find there to be a beautiful continuity in using wood grain to represent an aquatic subject matter and as far as I know I'm the only person creating paintings like this. It's hip to use wood as a canvas these days but very few people actually use the wood grain it's self as the figurative elements of the art piece! "The Lost Islands" is an arial perspective complete with reefs and surf breaks that I found within the grain lines of a very special piece of Maple. The resin utilized is crystal clear ultra uv resistant 'art resin' self leveling epoxy specifically designed to ensure the preservation and protection of both the woodwork and the integrity of these beautiful colors! This glossy sheen finish also makes it washable. The piece comes with it's own "French Cleat" for quick, easy and super secure hanging. The painting wraps around the edges of the board and the backside has two coats of varnish so that all sides of this piece are sealed. Enjoy! Mac - "Since the grain patterns in the wood are the result of water and nutrients moving through a tree I find there to be a beautiful cosmic parallel to be explored in crating artwork that purposes wood grain to represent oceanic texture. As the grain lines illuminate a point of tension or growth in the tree so does the wave that refracts around a point of tension on the coast, both of which document a transfer of energy either really slowly within the life of the tree or explosively fast as with the mounting surf. In this sense I feel like when I'm creating artwork out of wood and resin I'm using time it's self as a medium." "For superior varnishing all works utilize high gloss Art-Resin specifically designed to inhibit uv rays and preserve colors. Working with this resin, I’ve also began to create distinctive abstract resin paintings and now I’m integrating marquetry veneer work with resin painting."
