About The Artwork

Down to the River During the summer months of the initial Covid outbreak, the river that runs through Clevedon was heavily used. People brought paddle boards; canoes and all manner of flotilla so that they could bob about in none too clean water and annoy the ducks and moorhens. The elderly resident dog walkers, (that includes me), huffed a bit, nodded at the heron who was furious at hunting grounds despoiled, and walked on. I decided that if I ever bought a boat, it would be a Viking inspired coracle. I never put other people in my paintings but one day I may paint an elderly woman in the distance. In the meantime, all incidents need a witness. That’s why the owl and the hare look out of the picture frame. About the framing for the narrative series, dimensions given include the white frame. Although this shot is of a different painting, I put it in to show the frame. The frame is white MDF, which I sand back and repaint with satinwood or white gloss paint. I do not include the glass, as it would ruin the look of a wooden painted panel. The painting itself has been varnished and will not fade under normal interior conditions. I affix metal hoops and very strong cord to the back once I have taped up the back.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My work is concerned with the layering of translucent colour and form built up over time to create ethereal and symbolic imagery. I use paint, gold leaf, digital media and thread to achieve this. My original degree was in education but after 25 years of teaching I returned to the University of the West of England to complete a Masters in Multi Disciplinary Printmaking, gaining a Distinction. My work took a total change in direction, from abstraction to figurative work which embraced the concept of "divine feminine" combining the intricacies of pattern with Gothic aesthetics. I have recently retired from a 36 year teaching career and plan to paint, potter and plot constantly. Like most women artists I have created a studio at home. I live by the sea in South West England. www.rachelcawley.com
