About The Artwork

The idea for the intense purple of the background came from the purple ceramic flower arrangements of pansies on many of the crypts in the Montmartre cemetery in the artist’s neighborhood. In French, pensée, translates as both pansy and thought, hence it is a flower used to signify remembrance of a loved one. When she couldn’t figure out what color to paint the word Self, she finally decided to cue off a pansy’s center and paint it yellow. Exaggerated movement of the (artist’s) phone while using the panoramic camera feature produces misshapen images. She is obsessed with trying to capture photos that are distorted to the point where chandeliers in Parisian 18th century interiors appear to be swinging like a pendulum. She is intrigued by the swing of a heavy object connected to the end of a cord. Even better is the possibility of rotation when, as in this painting, there’s a heavy object on either end of a cable that is pinned in the center. The thick handmade paper of the painting allows for numerous heavy layers of pigment that result in intense color. The rectangle of midnight blue antique silk velvet swallows light in a manner not possible with pigments and provides a vacuum like visual void.

Terrell Lozada (b. 1962) is an American painter and sculptor living in Paris. She uses imagery and language to create works that explore the metaphysics of gender and power in contemporary society. Her work represents an internal, emotional world through objects subjected to unreliable or suspended gravity. Her aesthetic fulcrum is the late 18th century, particularly as it relates to French architecture. She works in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil on panel, cast bronze, etchings and carved wood. She is currently exploring tin-glazed terracotta (faïence stannifère) to combine color and form.
