About The Artwork

I made this painting, reflecting on the parties I attended while studying in New York. They were full of artists and seekers and punks (generally a combination of all three in each soul), and the lines between safe and dangerous were constantly blurred. Although recreational experimenting is youthful and gorgeous it has a dark shadow that sometimes strikes. For each person these questions play out differently. I want to examine how there is light and dark within the world of the scene, that it is bright even as it is a constant, joyous, sorrowful, never-ending night. The figure of death greeting a friend, is not ominous here but instead Death sits as a guest at the party, invited with every inhalation of smoke, shot of whiskey or cocaine. The poppies provide a deceptive sign of health or the natural world, beside the drugs on the table.

I’m a painter and designer currently based in Vancouver. I’ve loved drawing, painting and looking at art since childhood but only after starting studies at Parsons in graphic design, and meeting fine artists in New York, did I begin to take it seriously and have an everyday practice. I have worked with textiles, editorial design and photography but my true love is paint. I am a swimmer since childhood and the feeling of water runs through my work, it’s one of my most common subjects, appearing in small and large ways throughout the work I have created (a vase, a bathtub, a pool, the sea). My inspirations run from fashion editorials to new wave films to religious iconography. I have an undergrad in religious studies and the imagery around spirituality has always fascinated me. I’m particularly drawn to the spiritual dimension colours possess, their language and potential for communicating mood. I believe we all have strong associations with colour and that it has a healing potential, working with colours definitely does. I hope that you enjoy viewing this work, it comes from a pure place of exploration and intuition, the place of dreams.
