Vassil [va’sil] Ivanov is a mixed-media artist based out of the Seattle metro area, where he has resided for far too long. A native of Sofia, Bulgaria, Vassil was raised in a household where his mother encouraged him to paint on the wallpaper of their rented apartment, and later, she enrolled him in after-school art lessons. He earned a passing GPA in high school largely due to the straight A’s he got in art class. Vassil graduated from the Art Institute of Seattle with a degree in Graphic Design and spent roughly two years as an in-house designer for a tech company. But alas, he was not meant for the corporate world. The young artist left his cushy but dull job and burned through his life savings while he pursued a career as a full-time artist and freelance designer way before he was ready for it. “I was never a starving artist, but at one point, I was living off of frozen burritos and barely making rent” says Vassil. So he found a flexible job supporting intellectual freedom, and he continued his late-night experiments; turning canvases into gold. As the stacks of canvases grew, so did his reach. Vassil’s art has been showcased at several venues on the West Coast. Many of his pieces reside in private collections across the globe, from Seattle to Sofia, Switzerland, Spain, Singapore and beyond. Vassil describes his style as “abstract surrealism” and works with a variety of media to create vivid, colorful artworks that captivate his audience and invite them to get lost in his detail-rich paintings. Don’t ask him what they mean, just embrace the unknown. And enjoy.
