ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'The Pirates and the Bears' is a compelling piece, inspired by a particularly vivid dream. I maintain a nocturnal narrative—a dream journal—where I record each night's significant dream sequences. On one occasion, I found myself immersed in a fantastical world where pirates coveted not the typical jewels or money, but the teddy bears cherished by children. This artwork brings to life a memorable scene from that dream. It depicts a woman in a celebratory feast, savoring her victory with a captured teddy bear. My intent behind this painting is to arouse curiosity, to draw viewers into the intricacies of the scene and stimulate their imagination. I invite the audience to consider the events that unfolded and piece together their own version of the story. What truly fascinates me about the art of painting is its inherent subjectivity. Each observer, presented with the same scene, can interpret it differently, forming unique narratives from the seemingly random elements.

Iris is a Los Angeles-based artist, born and raised in Singapore and Korea. As a multidisciplinary talent, she brings an eclectic mix of experiences to her art, deeply influenced by her background as a design director for branding and illustration. Her work masterfully bridges the divide between traditional and digital realms. She begins with hand-drawn sketches, which she then converts into digital illustrations. These digitized drawings serve as blueprints for her paintings and other diverse mediums, creating a harmonious blend of the old and the new. Iris operates under the alternate artistic identity, 'Child Appetite'. The name draws from a Korean phrase, reflecting the belief that certain tastes and traits from childhood remain unaltered as we age. This notion fuels Iris's creativity and shapes her distinct artistic style. Her creations share a unified theme that evokes a vibrant, whimsical yet slightly melancholic feeling. They encapsulate the nostalgia of her childhood memories and the longing for a time gone by. Iris's dreams often mingle with these recollections, blending reality with unconscious imagination. This fusion of memory and imagination serves as the primary inspiration for her art, lending it a unique, dreamlike quality that sets it apart.
