About The Artwork

The Prosperity Doll was (and is) an inexpensive piece of ceramic that I bought in Soho when visiting my friend Marco a while back. It appealed to me.. it's supposed to be a symbol of success in business - a sort of good luck charm - much like the 'waving cat' that you can also find. I thought he'd make a good still life subject and so here he is sitting on a vintage Sari and surrounded by Mussel shells, a feather boa and a few other things to make a great big good luck symbol for success in business ! Acrylic on canvas, no need to frame as it looks great (and modern) as it is. 140 x 140 cm

PAINTING begins with a memory, an emotion, written phrases or the energy of thrown paint. Perhaps best described as action painting, the work is intuitive and unplanned, relying on speed and focus in execution, along with much 'accident' or unplanned gestural mark making as well as the magic of the paint itself. The work is about relationship, tension, waiting, the moment before the inevitable and the experience of waiting to be devoured. Landscape like at times but with no horizon, my paintings are 'abstract airscapes' each a stage (or web) in which my little glyphs or actors (sushi and insect like) play out the tensions between each other and the interpretations of the viewer. DRAWING: When drawing I work religiously from life, drawing from the model, found objects, dead insects, anything that fascinates me - and these forms enter my entourage of glyphs, featuring in my painted work. My drawing is, however, typically figurative. ME I studied art specialising in ceramic (figurative) sculpture and started painting almost by mistake - hoping to fund an adventure to California. Selling the contents of my art school portfolio at auction - with a few freshly done paintings - at my local pub I raised much more than I expected. California was great but the response to my work was even better, I returned to Bath to a clamour of requests, set up studio and began painting professionally in 2001. With a lot of collectors locally and a continual knocking at the studio door to 'see what I had available' I did not need to exhibit and indeed was continually sold out...since coming to Italy in 2004 I have no immediate buyers and have been able to keep work long enough to actually make an exhibition - worthy amount available, and as well as showing year round in Tuscany at Siena House I have also been shown in many locations with galleries Byard Art Gallery of Cambridge and Galleria Consorti of Rome.
