The Quarries Stormy Day Painting

I was on a hiking tour of quarries in Central Ohio with some others when the sky suddenly became overcast and started clouding up. We got drenched, but being a warm summer day we weren't cold and dried out pretty quickly! The water was so clear and reflective that I just had to capture the moment in time as the storm clouds were just beginning to gather. I liked the juxtaposition of the still reflective water and the active, gathering clouds. I see it as a metaphor of our daily lives where life brings transition and change and challenges arise. The limestone rock bed has existed before there were humans in these areas which provides a base of solidity, hope and comfort. I felt the watercolor would react well to the subject matter and chose to use Arches 140 lb. cold pressed paper as it's a strong paper with a good texture and takes the paint well. I chose a realistic approach to accommodate the reflective nature of the water and the sky.
