The Quarry in the Cliffs, Winspit, Dorset Painting

Large 100cm x 100cm painting on boxed canvas. There is a village in Dorset which I'm sure Thomas Hardy knew well. You walk down the valley through meadows where sheep graze and after a mile or so come to the cliffs where, once, stone was quarried. A steep climb down 'steps' hewn into the rock brings you to a rock ledge and a deep pool at the edge of the ocean. If the sea is rough it's far too dangerous to swim. But on a good day you slip into the silken, icy water and - depending on the swell, stay in the pool in safety or beyond for a long blissful swim. This is my many layered impression of the beauty of the place and the power and strength of the rock - and the sea. And the way, for all their power and strength, on a good day they seem to cradle you and hold you close to their heart. The painting is on boxed canvas with 1cm sides painted white, so can be hung as it is or framed. It's a large canvas of 100cm x 100cm and very dramatic with multi-layered brush and knife strokes. The colours sing and you could look at the painting for ever as it seems to invite you in to sit and gaze out to sea and soak up the sun.
