"Two Masters" is the latest painting in my series called The Root of the Problem. This is a small abstract painting, 20 inches tall by 16 inches wide, with traditional profile edge painted black. The work is executed in acrylic paint, both artists grade and household, and some gouache on the surface. Many layers of color give the painting a deep, saturated feel. I work with palette knives, brushes and my hands to apply the paint. The result is a slightly impasto surface which adds a wonderful tactile experience with the painting. This work is inspired by deep emotion, the innermost feelings we experience during personal struggle. I hope viewers will ultimately have their own unique experience and reaction to the painting, however my use of color and the name of the work are the figurative threads woven through the otherwise abstract piece. The title "Two Masters" is a scriptural reference. I chose that name to highlight the meaning of the work--the precipice of indecision and danger of a divided heart. The painting is signed in the lower right front corner, and is titled, dated and signed on the back. It is finished in an archival semi gloss varnish, and is wired and ready to hang.

Singular events and emotions are the inspiration for many of my paintings. I believe that color more than anything will provoke a response to a painting. If I can achieve an emotional charge between the viewer and my work, then I have reached my goal. Not everyone will say that they appreciate or understand abstract art. I say, don't stare at a work of art and try and force yourself to see what you think should be there. Look at what you see and accept it. That is is your totally unique experience with any work of art. The works of great artists such as Gerhard Richter, Joan Mitchell, Barnett Newman, Ad Reinhardt, Albert Oehlen, Christian Hetzel and many others feed my love of art and drive me to continue expanding my style.
