About The Artwork

“The Seven Trials of Esfandiar / Haft Khan-e Esfandiar" from The Epic of Persian kings. Esfandiar got Gorgsar drunk and asked him the shortest way to an unconquerable castel in Turan, Roin Fortress (Roin Dezh). He promised to assign Turan to Gorgsar if Arjasb was killed. Gorgsar showed him an abandoned road, where Esfandiar faced seven dangerous trials. The first trial was two wild wolves, while the second trial was two hungry lions. The third trial was a dragon with two bloody eyes and a cavernous mouth. The fourth trial was a witch called Ghoul with a mask, a tambour, and a glass of wine. The fifth trial was Simurgh (the phoenix). The sixth trial was wind, sleet, cold, and darkness. Finally, the seventh trial was water shortage and thirstiness. Esfandiar passed all seven trials and killed Gorgsar because of his deception. To conquer the fortness, Esfandiar and his companions entered as merchants, with the army hiding in the crates of goods. At midnight, after the party, when the guards were drunk, Esfandiar’s soldiers came out of the crates and conquered the fortress. Arjasb was killed. Esfandiar rescued his sisters and proudly returned to Goshtasb and Katayoun with the spoils. Despite Jamasb’s prediction that Rostam would kill Esfandiar, Goshtasb sent his son to Sistan in the final stage to possess the throne. The king’s command was to invite Rostam to join the Behi religion or bring him back to the capital with his hands tied if he refused... (A piece from “Minimal Shahnameh” Book.)

Born in 1966 Tabriz, Iran . I’m teaching Persian literature and poetry. I like beautiful stories especially epics and enjoy the stories that are told so sweet. As a researcher who is interested in Persian ancients and legends and as a teacher who wants to make difficult long and old texts, short and easy to understand for his students, I happen to create Shahnameh projects in which I can teach ancient Persian literature in two forms: pictures and short stories. Each project i create include a book of Persian legend stories and a collection of Paintings related to the stories. I started to paint when decided to create the very first project called Minimal Shahnameh (the book and the paintings) with zero experience in painting. I painted 67 pieces all the same size and technique. It took me 2 years to finish the collection. Each painting related to a story. I display some of them here in Saatchiart. The book of “Minimal Shahnameh” which is Farsi/English edition contains all stories of the entire Shahnameh plus the images of the paintings. It is available on Amazon. I like the idea to link the paintings with the written content since it can help readers of any level review the short stories in less time while enjoying the vivid scenes of the stories and experiencing their epic, mythical atmosphere. This will continue in my next projects as well. At the moment I am busy with the second project which includes some very sweet stories about Rostam lineage and Aryans and the paintings related to them.
