About The Artwork
Painted for the Melancholy series, "The Sorrows of the King" is inspired by the iconography of David Playing the Lyre For Saul with Jonathan, Biblical scene with multiple representations. Nicolas Maureau gives here an image where the sadness of King Saul infuses his melancholy on the two other characters. We also think of a sort of "Déjeuner Sur L'Herbe". The title come from Henri Matisse.
