There is an old celtic song entitled " the water is wide"-
I heard a musician by the name of Karla Bonoff sing a haunting and beautiful rendition of it. A part of the lyrics:
"The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
Neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall cross my true love and I".
I am interested in the ethereal and transient nature of life and my painting have reflected that for over twenty years.
Over the last two years I have been working on a series of vessels and boats. These are sometimes in juxtapositions with moody landscapes and or abstract landscapes. A search between a grounding element and the ethereal nature or transient nature of time and place.
with all my work - when in person there is always the element of layers. I work with many sequences to make a painting. Beginning with charcoal and building with hand made gesso, dry pigments and mark making. The translation of image takes place in the process when glazes of oil paint are combined with the above mentioned materials.
