The brick was made in the Whitehead Brickworks in Cwmbran around 1940. I came across this brick whilst reading the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead. From this starting point a series of works have been made about ontology and representation.

This painting, is made from the same clay that the brick was made from. The clay was extracted from the soil near the former brickworks site, then dried and ground into a powder. Walnut alkyd is then added to this to turn it into an oil paint.

The piece is framed and mounted and part of a larger series of works on the theme.

It has been painted on quality paper which has been protected from the paint with layers of clear primer.

My recent personal practice is trying to get beyond painting as image construction to look at and highlight the whole process. Among other concerns this includes the reasons for making paintings, the significance of the subjects and the provenance of the materials used. Recently this approach has led back to observational painting, but my work has also included work in ceramics, film, abstract painting and working with communities. All this results in a multi-layered practice informed and actively developing my understanding of pertinent contemporary issues such as Ecological concerns, psychology, identity, Industrial Heritage, the role of Fine Art in Higher Education and New Materialist philosophy. Outside of this I use my skills to provide services to others. This includes arts workshops, decorating and murals.
