ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Whilst I will always paint on handmade canvases, some of my work is applied on stitched canvas. By using every scrap of material, I intend to avoid waste whilst simultaneously highlighting society’s effort to overlook the clear environmental problems in our world today. I choose this way of working to reflect on the urgency of climate change, showing the contrast between an unstable climate with the beauty and harmony that still exists in our landscape today. By painting this way, the viewer is given a choice; to ignore the material and focus on the setting portrayed, or to be reminded of the instability of the landscape’s existence, carrying this forward in their everyday thinking.

Born in Glasgow, Hannah Buchanan (b.1997) (she/her) is a British artist currently based in Kent. Buchanan’s focus on the landscape is stimulated by her passion for the environment and an interest in Biocentrism. Buchanan studied Fine Art with History of Art at the University of Leeds where she developed her ability to capture the delicacy of the English countryside through oil painting. Buchanan aims to create a sense of calm in her work, simultaneously reminding the viewer of the fragility of our climate today. Buchanan has exhibited nationally, most notably with the Royal Glasgow Institute, winning the Cuthbert Award for ‘Work of Distinction from a New Young Artist.’ She enjoys painting in a greenhouse as her studio, as she is inspired by the greenery around her that is constantly changing through the seasons.
