'The colt of Wladimir de Vries' Radesingel Groningen Painting

'The colt of Wladimir de Vries' is a painting of the beautiful bronzestatue of the sculptor Wladimir de Vries which is standing in front of the Roman Catholic church 'Sint Jozefkerk'. When I bike through the city of Groningen I always stop to look at this amazing statue. It is so delicately made and has such a proudness about itself that I just had to make a painting of it. While I was making this painting there was an action about the trees at the radesingel. Protesters put scarfs around the trees as a means to give attention to the fact that the government wanted to cut the trees. That is why there is a red scarf around the tree you see in the painting. I used oilpaint because it makes the best colours. I also feel that oilpaint has more dept and can give more meaning and feeling to a painting. Because it is a material that dries slowly and you can work longer with it while it is still wet, I feel that it can also hold emotions. When I create a painting my intention is that it brings light and good feelings into an atmosphere. This painting is the first of a series of statues in Groningen. I describe the style as impressionism because the light and the colour is very important to me.
