ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This series of works- ‘The landscapes remembered in the body’ reflects my abstract style and careful articulation of the balance between the conscious and the unconscious mind. I explore the intersection of intentional and non-intentional art making, and this work demonstrates how our unconscious thoughts can direct our body into action, without intervention from our conscious self. The artworks are subjective but also strive objectively for a spot in the history of humanity. In the aforementioned painting, there is a simultaneous tension and unity between the collective and the individual; my artworks address the viewer’s experience by sharing my own. The artist’s self is represented on the canvas, and the ways in which the art mirrors my internal landscape enables the construction of a mirror for the viewer as well. In this way, the work represents the human condition.

I am a Korean artist working in painting, drawing, printmaking and making objects. I usually explore my inside things ever changing (feeling, emotion, thought, idea so on) through documenting records of my hand unconscious action. In a part my art is inspired by a Korean artist working in US, Ik-joong Kang, Ungno Lee; American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and Cy Tombly. Also during my research in Ph.D, I have been inspired by my supervisors, Australian artists: professor David Thomas and Doctor Phil Edwards. Generally ideas and methodologies on my art works are based on traditional Korean art concept and sensation, plus Jungian idea of 'Natural Symbols', American action painting.
