About The Artwork

The artwork shows a face, the expression seems to be one of sorrow, an emotion we all can relate to, that we have all experienced. The figuration is naive, direct and “child-like”, giving room to connect to natural emotions and experiences in life. The artwork can be said to belong to a direction of abstract expressionism, a direction where “the mask”, a figuration, is used as a natural expression, considered by some to be a natural end of the process. In the expression, all the elements in the motive, the tendencies, the impulses and the knowledge, gather in “the mask”. The direction gives room for a universal language, opening up for emotions and individual interpretations. The form of expression makes it possible, directly and without “rules”, to express the personal experiences regardless of a context with particular expectations. The work can also be said to connect to the traditions of naive art and folk art, expressions that can be considered a critique to modernization and the alienation of human beings in regard to their natural selves. The work comes with an example passepartout. Passepartout size: 40x30 cm Image size: 16-16,5 x 14 cm Production: 2021, Tromsø, Norway

In a multidimensional world, art brings visibility to different viewpoints. As an artist with a minority background, I will present artistic expressions from the viewpoint of the Kveni people in the north of Norway. The Kvens as a people belongs to the cap of north, the kvens was originally situated in the north of Finland and Sweden, in Tornedalen and Bottenviken, and goes far back in our history, Many kvens lived in the north of Norway, and became a minority, with a different language and culture. The Kveni people experienced Norwegianizing in modern time, suppression from the government. Very few were to inherit their culture in modern time because of the suppression. I will try to understand what it means for a human being to loose identity and culture this way. I will also try to understand more deeply the historical roots of the Kveni people, like my grandmother, the last person in my line, to speak the Kveni language. Thematically, works are found within a conceptual tradition, or as representations of the stories of the Kveni people and their historical landscapes. This page will change as I start to bring forward new works, in line with the artistic statement.
