Sebastian Boesmi ( 1980 ) describes his work as the study of the relationship between the micro and macro. Interested in our collective imagination, Sebastian believes that someone should see a work and relate to it, creating a new personal image that reflects something within themselves while somehow drawing from and adding to an abstract map of our collective understanding. He believes in the capacity of colour to transmit abstract emotions, in both the visceral and spontaneous gesture. “When painting, I often don’t care what it represents, I’m more interested in the relationship between the many different images represented within. The various interpretations, the visceral and spontaneous gestures, the unthought in the expression of line and colour. I do not fear form and always try to reach the limit or the smallness of the surface. A painting is the result of many others, an evolution of my own language and why I paint. I know that art will not change the world, but hopefully I can change what someone thinks of it. We will never understand the work of an artist and that is why we should refrain from asking for explanations and rather get closer to the various manifestations of art for its aesthetic value and mainly by what they tell us” Born in Argentina (1980) Sebastian Boesmi grew up in Paraguay and is an artist living and working in Amsterdam. Initially, his creative nature took him to study architecture, a career that he later swapped for Fine Arts. While pursuing his artistic interests, he attended various courses on xylography, digital art, painting and design in Asunción (Paraguay), Buenos Aires, Paris and New York. In 2000 Sebastian started participating in group gallery exhibitions and in 2007, having returned from art studies in New York, he began his solo exhibitions. In 2008 the French embassy in Paraguay awarded Sebastian the prestigious Matisse prize, which afforded him the opportunity to move to Paris where he continued to paint, invigorated by his new European influences and making his first solo exhibition in Paris. In 2011 he relocated to Barcelona, where he lived and painted full timeIn 2015, after having returned to Barcelona where he continued to paint, he moved to Berlin. In 2013 he was awarded the German Marma Art Project prize and was based in Berlin as an artist in residence. More recently Sebastian has been exploring the art scene in Amsterdam where he hopes to find new inspiration and opportunities.
