About The Artwork

To find her subjects, Kerry mines images and themes gleaned from a number of popular culture and classical sources. Circe, the sea nymph enchantress that makes a brief appearance in Homers Odyssey, stars in a modern novel by Madeline Miller. Miller explores themes of Mortality, Fragility, and Fulfilment within her novel - themes that Kerry believes becomes particularly relatable to us all as we reach middle-age, but themes that really should be ever present from puberty up! This playful painting is an exploration in tone and fantasy iconography to appeal to all those who love a little bit of magic - with the intention of maybe creating a much larger work of this image further down the track. The canvas is covered in Japanese Rice Paper to give a lovely texture that is akin to the movement on the surface of water. And, as with most of Kerry's paintings, she has painted in layers. The background using action painting (expressionistic) techniques - pouring, dripping, splashing paint and involving my body in the painting process rather than just the paint brush. The figure was created using contemporary art pop art techniques and stencils, and a further layer of hand painting brought the foreground and background together. Kerry's palette is colourful and uses strong contrasts to capture an uplifted mood. Mostly consisting of complementary colours, Kerry focuses on using phthalo greens and variations of red and orange. This painting is painted using professional artist acrylics and mediums from Matisse, Golden, and Liquitex Professional Spray Paint. Along with the Japanese Rice paper texture, Golden Self Levelling Medium has been painted onto the canvas prior to painting the image - creating further texture and an impression of movement to the surface of the painting. The painting is finished with a Satin Varnish. Professionally stretched, signed on the back, ready to hang and enjoy!

Kerry was born in Wudinna, a remote and tiny dusty town in South Australia, in 1972. This was a time and culture where women weren't allowed in the local pub and were expected to quit work when they got married. She distinctly recalls seeing articles about Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol as a teenager but thought the art world was a world where she couldn't belong - girls were supposed to marry farmers and have children. After a diversion into a "sensible career" and motherhood, Kerry went back to her passion and was conceptually trained through the South Australian School of Art in 2012, with a Bachelor of Visual Art, Specialisation Painting. During her studies, she turned to her love of stencil-making and action painting techniques with acrylic paint and created her own style. Kerry won the UniSA Medal for her outstanding academic and artistic results, and in 2013 her artwork was selected by top South Australian art-aficionado's, including the then Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Nick Mitzevich (now director of the National Gallery of Australia), to participate in The Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition - an incredible honour for any SA graduating tertiary art student. Today she works as an underwater photographer and painter from her home studio in Darwin, Northern Territory. She has participated in many group and solo shows. Her artwork is held in private collections in New Zealand, The United States, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, and all-around Australia. She was selected as a Finalist in the 2021 Bluethumb Art Award, and her upcoming projects include a two-month residency in Germany, which will be followed by her first international solo show. She has also just been selected as a Finalist for The Percival Photographic Portrait Prize 2024. Her mission is to uplift women with her art – this is the engine that fires her entire practice.
