For me, painting is a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. At first some exciting things show up, in my case it started with a sound and out of that vigorous lines and color, but I try to disregard these initial, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole.

Thunder CLAP-It was so loud I jumped. Some people said they heard a few claps of thunder this weekend with the rain, others did not. If you follow the old folklore, thunder in the winter means snow is coming. In our case, the temperature dropped.

The general folklore though goes by 10 days from getting winter thunder you should get snow. Some folklore can actually be based on a bit of science.
Wives’ tales, legends, and myths are normally not the source for information in today’s weather, but early American farmers observed many things about the weather and the earth and turned them into sayings that seemed to have accurately pointed to recent weather events.

Some still use certain signs — rings around the moon, an angry morning sky, a clap of thunder during the winter — as weather predictors. And weather experts say some superstitions have it right.

The rapid expansion and heating of air caused by lightning produces the accompanying loud clap of thunder.

I enjoyed the entire day exploring the emotion of a Thunder Clap.

Cheryl Johnson Cheryl Johnson is an American abstract artist whose work has appeared in galleries throughout the US. Her works are held in numerous private collections in the US, Europe, and Canada. She maintains a studio in Kauai, HI and divides her time between there and Charlotte, NC. A highly collectible artist. With a long and varied career as an instructional designer and graphic artist. Johnson worked for many years as an instructional designer and graphic designer and was ensconced in a life of technology and marketing. In 2010, she gave up a regular pay cheque at IBM to pursue her love of painting full-time. Cheryl Johnson describes painting as "a way of sharing my internal dialog in an external way. My commitment is to create dynamic yet sensitive, lyrically beautiful, works of art. My work resonates with a passion for color, line and light created to share an expression of overlapping time, memory and reality. My intention is to create work that is truthful and real, that has depth and is compelling from a distance and up close. I have come to believe that gravitas in art relates most specifically to how well the artist can transform an emotional idea into its visual equivalent. ”
