Tranquility is an original painting by Amy Devlin. My process starts with taking the photographs I work from, I like to experiment with angles and light in the photographing. Every inch of the canvas has multiple layers on to build up the feeling of light, water and body, every layer focusing in on more detail until there is a balance of tight detail and watery fluidity. This painting was focusing on the reflections of light on the body and the tranquility of the water as she floats, suspended, trying to capture the physical memory of the warmth of sun on your skin under water and the solitude of the sea.
Born and raised in New Zealand, Amy Devlin has lived in the UK for 20 years, first in London, then since 2015 in rural Kent.
Amy’s current body of work focuses on bodies in water and bodies of water. “I love the exploration, chasing the physical memory of being underwater. That tranquil feeling of the sun on your body even through the water.

Originally from New Zealand, I have been in the U.K. for 20 years now, after 18 years in London I relocated out to the lush Kent countryside where I paint in a studio at the bottom of the garden with my dog and 6 Music. In my paintings I love the idea of recreating the physical memory of water, sunshine and light. I aim to capture in a single moment the exhilaration, the joy, the solitude or the tranquility of being in the water. I explore all manner of subjects in my work but I find the underlying connection of water seems to reoccur continuously.
