I’m interested in how we use architecture to relate to nature and to each other. My current series of work, Fun House, uses visual elements and references to amusement park icons and attractions. In the portrait pieces, I use this iconography to comment on our psychology and the fragmentation found in our typical daily lives. I hope to provoke a re-evaluation of our assumptions about the world and how we chose to live in it.

Cory Sewelson is a Los Angeles native who currently works and resides in Altadena, California. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Northridge in 1977. Outside of his art studies and practice, there have been some other strong influences that have affected the conceptual direction of Sewelson’s work. His earlier education in biology along with a “day” job designing theme parks and animal habitats, as well as a life-long love of the outdoors have all contributed to shaping the content and focus of his paintings. Sewelson’s work explores our relationship to nature through the built world of our architecture. Sewelson has shown extensively here in the U.S as well as in Italy and France. His work is held in both corporate and private collections as well.
