About The Artwork

Looking out of the window I was inspired by the way the tulips glow against a background of a green lawn and it was this I wanted to capture in this painting as well as the way vibrant colours of the tulips seem to dance against their background. For many years I have admired the use of tulips in Persian and Turkish art. They feature prominently in tapestry, fabric design and Isnik ceramics. By chance the tulips in this painting are a species originally from Turkey called “Ballerina”. The name "tulip" is thought to be derived from a Persian word for turban, which it may have been thought to resemble. Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated. They came to the attention of the West in the sixteenth century, when Western diplomats to the Ottoman court at Istanbul observed and reported on them.
