ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Yesterday, some weird ballet, YES glue & a box of paints. All styles of paper were scattered. A teapot posed still and cold, its job fulfilled hours prior. Empty glasses of wine stood buzzed on the shelf. A hurricane of shapes & colors. Ideas can be frozen & sold, painted, plastered & ideally set free. There's something in the brain that is released when creating. Whether we knead bread, hammer a nail or paint, it is human design working properly. From the ruin and brain storm we survived, stood back & laughed. Yesterday, some weird ballet.

W Paintings are born out of our collaboration. We have been married and painting together since 2013. Our process is obscure and based on layers; we generally have no plan for an outcome. We view the layers of our paintings the way we do the layers of individuality and marriage. If one of us makes a decision that is spot on, it stays where it is on the painting and we add to it. If a decision is poor and doesn't fit, we scrape away and change it until it works. Consideration of one another's moves is key along with a bit of struggle, compromise, honesty and a respect for our individual intuition. We have been influenced greatly by old magazines, dated National Geographics, pregnant antique stores along the coasts of California and Oregon. We are drawn to the things that stand the test of time or simply stand still in time. Our minds bloom by the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Paul Cézanne, Grandma Moses, Gerhard Richter and a trough full of others. We drink from the trough often but never quench our thirst fully so as to leave room for our own contribution. -Ryan and Alina Welch
