ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Two of my nieces inspired this piece. Over the years, I’d heard pieces of their story. So one afternoon we got together so They could fill in the gaps. Some of it was moving other parts were troubling. Nonetheless, we ended up sharing about overcoming childhood traumas represented by the tricycle and the evolutionary struggle processes represented by the butterflies. We met at a park later and they came dressed as themselves. I posed them like the painting The Two Sisters by Theodore Chasseriau. I feel this pose expresses their conjoined experiences and reliance on one another.
