Sumesh Cs (b. 1980, Malayattoor, Kerala, India) is a contemporary Indian artist whose practice explores the relationship between traditional visual culture and contemporary expression. Trained in painting and deeply influenced by the rich visual heritage of Kerala, he develops a distinctive language that combines the bold colour, rhythmic lines, and decorative energy of Kerala mural painting with the spontaneity and emotional intensity of contemporary art.
He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Painting from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit and has received specialised training in Kerala mural painting. His artistic practice has evolved from his experience in traditional mural painting into a contemporary approach characterised by vibrant colour, expressive forms, strong contours, and energetic compositions.
Sumesh's paintings often explore portraiture, cultural identity, human relationships, popular icons, and moments from contemporary life. Rather than simply reproducing his subjects, he interprets them through colour, gesture, rhythm, and simplified forms, creating works that connect traditional Indian aesthetics with a modern visual sensibility.
His practice reflects an ongoing exploration of how an inherited artistic tradition can be transformed without losing its cultural essence. The influence of Kerala mural art remains visible in his use of saturated colours and confident lines, while his contemporary compositions and expressive treatment give the works an individual identity.
He has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in India. His recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at David Hall, Fort Kochi, Kerala (2025), a group exhibition at Kerala Lalithakala Akademi's Durbar Hall Art Gallery, Kochi (2025), and a group exhibition at Jaya Mahal Palace Hotel, Bengaluru (2025).
Based in Kerala, Sumesh Cs continues to develop a contemporary visual language rooted in Indian artistic heritage while engaging with the broader possibilities of contemporary painting.
