The painting is inspired by the historical context of martial law, a period of political repression where performing arts were banned. The specific plight of dancers, symbolized by the unused, dust-covered shoes and broken ghungroos, reflects the broader impact of this era on the arts and culture. This work draws on the stories of individuals who lost their livelihoods and creative outlets during this time, aiming to evoke a profound sense of empathy. The dust-covered shoes and broken ghungroos are intended to evoke a strong emotional response, highlighting the loss of culture and personal expression. I also hope viewers will think critically about the impact of political and social upheaval on the arts, and perhaps be inspired to appreciate and support artistic endeavors in their own communities. Acrylic paint was chosen for its versatility and durability. Its quick-drying nature allows for the creation of layered textures, which is ideal for conveying the accumulation of dust and the sense of abandonment. The vibrant yet muted tones achievable with acrylics help to capture the somber mood of the subject matter. The shoes laid on top of one another and the broken ghungroos are powerful symbols of the dancers' inactivity and lost dreams. They are tangible representations of the impact of martial law on personal and cultural levels. These objects, associated with movement and rhythm, now lie still and silent, emphasizing the cessation of artistic expression. A realistic style ensures that the objects are immediately recognizable and relatable, making the emotional impact more direct. The symbolic elements, such as the layering of shoes and the breaking of ghungroos, add depth to the narrative, inviting viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the deeper implications of the artwork.

I absolutely despise plain white backgrounds. I think a good background can either make or break your art. This is why I try to paint with as much attention to my background as I do to my subjects. My intention with this has always been to add to what the subject is portraying and create an atmosphere that resonates with the painting's narrative. Human faces have always intrigued me. Each face, each frown, each fine line speaks volumes. All these tiny details convey a story of its own, but only if we look close enough. I like to think that faces and how they are drawn can portray emotions and feelings that perhaps not even words can. As a portrait artist, I love playing around with expressions to bring the painting come to life. In this, I love working with traditional mediums i.e. acrylics and oils on canvas and sometimes even charcoal and graphite on Bristol.
