About The Artwork

This image reflects my concern with animals and the environment and our sometimes strange and inconsistent relationship with other species. The circular format has featured often in my work for several years. It suggests to me a fleeting moment, something dreamlike and impermanent. I hope the viewer will have a double response to these images…first that they will enjoy the decorative nature of the images, and second, that they will recognise a more serious layer underlying its beauty. I think about how we keep ourselves emotionally distant and fail to recognise that we are a part of the natural environment we inhabit. We often fail in our duty of care, preferring to see nature as a fantasy we sometimes visit. For me a beautifully made wooden panel is closer to the ordinary objects we live close to and touch than a stretched canvas which we think about as something special and just for looking at from a distance.

I am a South African artist based in Cape Town, South Africa. I lectured in Sculpture in Johannesburg before moving to London in 2007. I returned to South Africa in 2020. My work reflects my concern with our emotional dependence on the natural environment and our complex relationship with other animals. I am preoccupied with the idea, reflected in my artistic practice, that we suffer some kind of emotional disruption when we are inattentive and don’t recognise our duty of stewardship to the natural world of which we are a part. The result is internal, or emotional, chaos - individual or collective - in the human world which is expressed in external crises; in environmental destruction, for example. My work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the Johannesburg Art Gallery, The Durban Art Gallery, The UNISA (University of SA) Art Gallery, The SA Reserve Bank, Standard Bank Collection, WAM (Art Museum of the University of the Witwatersrand).
