About The Artwork

This work expresses the contrast of preservation and decay of cultural footprint. Heavier impasto than my usual style and predominant neutral/white pockets stand out in this painting. .

Himani Gupta (b.1985) has been creating artworks for the last 14 years. After an undergraduate education in Business Studies from India, she trained in Fine Arts and Spatial Design at Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London. She also holds a M.Sc. in Real Estate and Urban Planning from University College London. Himani's work studies ‘Psychogeography’ which is the impact of the built environment on human emotions and identity. She explores how land, spaces and cities evolve both structurally and organically. She is particularly drawn towards elements from architecture and cities. Cities, land and their components feature heavily in her work, as she believes they catalyze movements, politics and human collaborations. Her Visual Arts practice is informed by exploration of the outdoors, land and geography; travelling through and viewing diverse cityscapes and urban research. She combines aerial views of spaces, maps and 2D forms representing the built environment and expresses this through painting, drawing and mixed media. Her work stems from her varied experiences; extensive travel and living in different cities and sensing the dynamic spaces she travels through. Her work process is derived from photographs, text and mind mapping. In her parallel profession as a Management Consultant and Urban Researcher, she advised Governments and private clients on urban development strategy and how to optimise cities through development and technology. Notable clients include the Aga Khan Trust for Culture among various other private clients, bi-lateral organisations and Indian State Governments. She has also worked as a spatial designer and conceptualised and executed several hospitality, retail and commercial spaces across India.
