About The Artwork
The painting is an interpretation of an urban plan of the Maltese grand harbour area depicting "the three cities" and the numerous docks. The capital city, built by the Knights of St John after the 1565 Great Siege, sits proudly at the heart of the natural harbour, and is immediately recognisable on plan due to its grid system. The land is characterised by a number of peninsulas, occupied by fortified cities and towns. The painting plays on contrasts between sea and land, infrastructure and undeveloped land.
