ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Abstract painting in acrylics and mixed media on wooden panel. This painting from the series ‘Crossing Borders’ is about crossing borders but also about subverting them. I love that moment of passage between the two, that place on the border where two worlds meet and energize each other. Crossing Borders explores the visible and the invisible and in particular the processes by which individuals, groups, influences and ideas cross between these two categories. My works refer to the ways in which boundaries exclude and render individuals, communities, and places 'invisible'. The issue of borders is in its essence the question of identity. It is not only a geographical matter but a categorization of those who are within and those who lie beyond. Crossing borders means a form of self-reflection and an attempt to understand what appears foreign to us, to challenge stereotypical ideas and merging those which may have appeared separate, us and them – in all our differences. The painting is framed in a white wooden box frame, ready to hang.

Linda Coppens is a Belgian contemporary abstract painter. From an early age she demonstrated an innate artistic talent but could not pursue an art education at that time, instead she earned a Master in Psychology. But her interest in art remained and about twenty years later she pursued an art education at the Academy of Visual Arts in Liedekerke, Belgium. In 2020, she moved to Torrevieja, Spain, where she currently resides. In her colourful paintings she mobilizes colour, texture and gestural mark making as a structure for the creation of abstract compositions to evoke a sense of emotional balance in the viewer. Linda Coppens has exhibited extensively in Belgium, US, France and Luxembourg. Her art is found in many private collections worldwide. Using a mix of mediums that includes acrylic paint, oil and cold wax, I layer my mediums using non-traditional tools and techniques. My inspirations include the unexpected feelings and thoughts generated by poetry; the weather worn surfaces of derelict urban buildings; and the vibrant and bountiful visual world of nature. In order to evoke the various realms of human experience that inspire me, I surrender to process, allowing my paintings to manifest slowly according to their own rhythm and internal logic rather than planning my compositions in advance. Time is also an essential element in my work, as the numerous layers of paint can be read as records of the history of their own making.
