Based on the Venus of Willendorf in lower Austria, the limestone statuette dating to 24,000 BCE was originally coloured in red ochre. As the first known representations of the human form, the Venus series of female figurines invites us to reimagine their prehistoric meaning. Their interpretation as apotropaic figures, emblems of success and security, goddesses and supreme creators to be revered or worshipped speaks to their significance.
