About The Artwork

The list of what goes into the making of these extremely complex paintings includes beeswax, tar, acrylic paint, oil paint, printed tissue, charcoal, pastel, lacquer and modeling paste. This series from a few years back evokes the ancient with their layered, weathered surfaces, but are also somehow strangely contemporary. This is part of a series of paintings that has been ongoing for years, with later ones becoming brighter, looser and more biomorphic. The paintings up to now have all been sold privately, directly to collectors, often before completion. The paintings in the series have been placed both in the most contemporary settings and rooms full of fine antiques, reflecting their balance of ancientness and modernity. This is a large painting that will make its present felt throughout an entire room. Painted on board, with sturdy stretcher built for support.

I have been selling my art worldwide since around 1990. For eight years I had a gallery on Magazine Street in New Orleans; I sold it in 2019 and moved everything online - which is where things seemed to be headed. My paintings are in fine collections from Beirut, to London, to mansions in Aspen and the California wine country. But it's important to me that the prices not rise to where they are unaffordable for collectors who are not wealthy; so I try to keep them reasonable. My influences include Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Julian Schnabel and Sean Scully. I have never been interested in the forms I choose for my paintings. I make quick decisions about them. What matters to me is surface quality, color, line quality, negative space. Sometimes the negative space is more important than the forms that push forward.
