ABOUT THE ARTWORK
color sumi inks on unbleached rice paper. 14.5 x 20 in., 37 x 51 cm. Done on unbleached rice paper, something I was experimenting with at that time. It’s a parchment with a mat finish which suits and enhances the mood of this picture well. It is impressive that after all these years the paint remains just as fresh as when it was first painted. The scene is inspired by common roadside village scenes in rural indonesia. My paintings in that period were done free hand, without preliminary sketches nor any working lines on the paper. This is paint applied directly on a blank page. The close up picture is of higher resolution to be able to get a better feel for the texture and brush strokes of the painting. Then there’s the recent photoshoot.

I'm Canadian born now residing in Malaysia. I've been working professionally as an artist since 1980 ish… time flies. I have exhibited my paintings in Vancouver and coastal B.C., Bangkok, Singapore & Malaysia, areas I’ve lived in over time. Now I do it all online. I’ve traveled extensively over the years and you’ll see that people, places and cultures are a recurring theme in my art. I attach importance to papers I use for my paintings. Some are done on acid free watercolour papers, from 180lb weight to 300lb. I also use handmade parchment type papers. These are thick yet pliable, strong, with deckled edge that add to the look of my paintings. I’m still a passionate guy. I’m passionate about life and people, passionate about art and painting. And I feel really at my best when I’m putting all these things down on paper. I only wish I had more time to delve into all these activities of mine. But I work with what I have. My health sucks so I’m slowing down. And there's more: book illustration, portrait, comic strip, caricature. I also work with camera and computer, to create the images brush strokes just can't deliver. So follow my brush work and hopefully you’ll find that special painting meant just for you.
