About The Artwork

This piece was created in tandem with two other pieces. All three of them were inspired by my three great aunts named Bertha, Laverne and Violet. They were school-teacher spinsters and farmed land that is now part of the Marcellus shale gas formation. The art was created during a mini-residency I completed in July 2019. My theme focused on fear and courage and I used images of knots and textile scraps for inspiration. I imagined fear unraveling much like a piece of linen cloth to reveal a more flexible textile that still maintained its integrity as a fitting metaphor for fear and courage. If you look closely you can see the textural surface that I built up and the dry brush imagery used to create a “weathered” look. Much like my strong, elder Aunts, all who lived on a remote rural farm well into their 90’s, this strength of character helps build up resources against any fear buttressed with courage.

Mine is a world of color, intuition and wonder. Drawing upon heart-felt memories and ordinary moments, I am inspired to create images that reflect these feelings. I am a contemporary abstract painter and my chosen medium is acrylic. Working through the searching process of layering, excavating and revealing, I create multi-layered paintings that evoke a sense of peace and beauty. I start with a loose composition of shapes, transforming the piece through many stages. Balancing the physical act of painting with creative decision-making, I incorporate mark making and strive to maintain the energy of my first efforts. Staying true to these first efforts allows me to stay in touch with my most authentic work. I was introduced to painting at age seven by my grandmother. I hold a BFA in graphic design and an MA in Sociology. My studio can be found at the Canopy artist complex at 916 Springdale Road in Austin, TX. I am represented by Artworks Gallery and Art Direct, both in Austin; Son of a Sailor in San Antonio, TX and Envy Interiors in Baton Rouge, LA. I am committed to a life making and celebrating art.
