Virginia (Woolf) Painting

Portrait of Virginia Woolf painted from imagination, without the intention of painting Virginia Woolf - I decided it was her after the painting was finished. The text is an excerpt of her last note to her husband, before she drowned herself: "Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can't go on spoiling your life any longer". My series "Empathy" has 111 portraits, mostly in acrylics, at times in ink. The backgrounds have often a weathered aspect; I often integrate in the paintings weathered or aged pages from timeworn books and vintage photos. In front of that weathered backgrounds, the humanity passes by, with all its different nuances and its inner worlds, with all its desires and obsessions, fixations and compulsions, fears and hopes, longings and contradictions... A humanity that is showing its bare soul. The portraits are imaginary, even though some are interpretations of known or unknown people.
