This is part of a series created during Lockdown, inspired by events in Japan. It is relatively surreal, yet also anecdotal in that it responds to a series of happenings, with clear reference to the artist Hokusai to emphasise how a country richly laden with tradition, had/has been shaken by Covid 19. I intentionally chose to work on 'one part' of a Japanese screen as the 'story' reflects just a fraction of what was going on at the time. Images such as the cruise ship 'The Diamond Princess' and also the flower: chrysanthemum emphasise both fear and positivity + at the centre of it all, one young woman, face-masked, experiencing perhaps both these emotions. Overall, I aimed for beauty within chaos.

Currently working on a new series of paintings and drawings in response to Covid 19: 'Essentials/Non-essentials. For the past 23 years, I have been painting professionally in places with great, natural light: Barcelona, Cádiz, Whitstable and Granada....always learning something new in the process. My work is largely representative and includes several portraits, though more recently, landscapes and interiors too. Sometimes, I take huge risks and abandon my brush in favour of lavish injections of paint. Despite these seemingly random acts, precision is a concern along with a desire to respond honestly to my subject. When I make a portrait, as with all my work, I aim to create something meaningful. Composition is important to me-especially where there is background detail, adding to the narrative. However, for me, the face predominates. I have enjoyed looking at many sitters, exploring their faces and getting a sense of them + seeing how we respond to one another. I have exhibited widely/ internationally, including in Barcelona, Cadiz, New York, Edinburgh, Argentina and London, at The Mall Galleries.
