I was touched by the life of Leonard Cohen and the Refugee problem that the world is experiencing. When Cohen died, I was extremely touched by the way the Montreal people responded. I am a comic performer who paints. Thirty five years ago while performing in Berlin at the Wintergarten, I found a blank canvas lying on the footpath at Hackescher Markt. I picked it up, took it home and have been painting ever since. I am autodidactic and have had no formal art training, but I have developed a style. My paintings are narratives, framed as figurative theatrical scenes. They are inspired by shows I have performed in, my fascination with our socialite world and a desire to tell stories. They are also a wonderful daytime occupation, when performing at night in shows around the world. I start each painting by placing my lead characters. They are often repositioned or transformed. Moving them helps develop the scene. New characters arrive. Local elements are squeezed in. Bodies become intertwined. Perspective is set aside. Drinks are served. A dash of decadence is added to spice things up. Music starts playing. A fish drops in. Clothes are taken off or hidden. And finally... everything finds its place. I work with acrylic on large un-stretched canvases. Acrylic dries quickly and can be rolled up for travelling, essential to my life as a nomadic performing artist.
