About The Artwork

This framed painting features the Silk Street Entrance to the Barbican Arts Centre with its spectacular backdrop of Brutalist Architecture: Shakespeare Tower, the Barbican Conservatory and Frobisher Crescent where my studio is based. What excites me about this entrance is that it is always a hubbub of activity. By night, guests arrive for the theatre, concerts and by day too, for matinees, art galleries or simply to enjoy the open areas, coffee shops and brutalist architecture. There is always a sense of anticipation as one walks up Silk Street not merely visually but also because one senses the sound of the art world within. The painting features the BBC van which regularly parks in Silk Street during the day in order to record live. Also visually one sees the colourful City of London bollards and bicycles available to be rented. I hope that viewers will feel the same excitement when viewing this picture that I feel whenever I arrive home. Personally, I feel energised that I am literally living on top of the drama of the Barbican and I hope this scene evokes something of this to my viewers. The vivid colours in this artwork reflect my interpretation of the light as it falls on the concrete of the Barbican. But I feel that the entrance to the Barbican has something dramatic about it for everyone - arriving here means you are about to enter one of London's top cultural centres and a world famous Brutalist landmark. The artwork is painted on recycled palette papers and the framing of this artwork preserves the back as well as the front of the painting. The artwork is a kind of palimpsest of an earlier artwork and the colour is in part derived from this memory of creating another piece of art. In this way, the process of recycling is intrinsic to my painting. I employ charcoal as well to evoke the raw, primitive texture of the Barbican concrete and the urban feel of this iconic part of London.
