ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work will be sent stretched and stapled on a wooden frame, (inside a safe wooden box). With the information of the technical data sheet and signed on the back. And I enclose the Certificate of Authenticity. In the year 2023, my mother sent me a surprising gift from Venezuela to Spain, a box containing fifty-five notebooks of school notes. These notebooks were part of the testimony of my student career: from elementary school to university. In the last pages of each one of them, I gave free rein to my imagination and creativity. There I wrote my poems, reflections, experiences and a large number of drawings and doodles. When I reread them today, I have relived a range of memories full of sensations and emotions, some nostalgic and others not so much. We have all filled those last pages of a notebook at some time, my purpose is to make them transcend: my current pictorial work is a tribute to those pages. (My works focus on memory and deep-rooted memories). I do this through an almost kinesthetic process of associative memories, in which I recreate elements such as texts, images and textile prints, etc., that evoke past times. These elements are captured in pieces of fabric sewn together, like patchwork, where each piece of fabric symbolizes a part of the mental map of the memory: a taste, a smell, a melody, etc. Taking into account that with the passage of time memories become translucent, that the information stored in the memory fades and that these memories become less intense and precise, I resort to the technique of airbrushing, which due to its diffuse finish allows me to adequately express the appearance and state of the memories.

Summary. Ritchy Ruiz Véliz, is a Venezuelan visual artist based in Barcelona, Spain. His beginnings in art were influenced by graffiti and the concepts of postmodern painting. As a member of the Venezuelan diaspora, today made up of millions of compatriots, his artistic work is nourished mainly by time, memory and remembrance, recurring themes among those who have had to emigrate from the country due to socioeconomic conditions. This fragmented memory is what Ritchy captures in his works, in which he uses the patchwork technique, joining different pieces of canvas to offer a fragmented vision, thus achieving an image similar to the mechanism of memory. In this way, texts, images and textile prints act as references to past times, when combined in a process -practically kinesthetic- of associative memories where smells, sounds, flavors, etc. are mixed.
