About The Artwork

Series: Colour Poetry Karen van de Vliet developed an approach to her work that focusses on the beauty of imperfection. She is intrigued by seemingly ordinary shapes that were not created intentionally, such as weathered and eroded surfaces caused by nature, or casual traces of use. Mesmerised by the shapes in the thick paint of pedestrian walkways, chewing gum on the street or cracks in damaged building blocks, Karen translates these structures and reliefs onto the canvas. Her great love for nature, its trascience and the beauty of everyday life, become visible through abstract, colourful and expressive paintings.

I live and work in Rotterdam (the Netherlands) *** I am intrigued by shapes that arise on weathered, chipped, broken, planed and dented surfaces. It is in these weathered parts that I find the essence of true beauty. Taking inspiration from these findings, I create wondrous abstract pieces that depart from the gravitation towards stains. Working with stains enables me to let go of all expectations and give free rein to expression. Hereby, acrylic paint, water and differing other materials are intuitively applied onto the surface. The search for a state of freedom without judgment ends when harmony is reached. When my eye is not drifting away, and attention is brought solely to the work itself. For me, creating an artwork is like getting to know a new piece of you with every action you take. In that way, my work can be described as a reflection of myself, as well as my environment; constantly moving and developing.
