Art Description

Painting: Oil on Canvas.

This piece is inspired by my interest in Spanish history and my love for Spanish painters like Velazquez and Goya. It is painted on raw canvas to allow the black to seep into the canvas and achieve an incredibly deep, flat background. I first became aware of this technique whilst studying the works of Francis Bacon, another painter who was influenced by Velazquez.

The title refers to the city of Grenada where the model is from (grenada being the Spanish word for pomegranate) but also alludes to the pomegranates rich history as a symbol in art, mythology and also religion. Many scholars believe that it was a pomegranate and not an apple eaten by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
