ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Growing up in California, I was just in grade school when I decided to pick wild flowers to bring to my teach on the very last day of school. I had them in hand, and she smiled kindly, and put them in a vase. Before I left that day, she whispered that the poppies were wild and beautiful, and also our state flower. From there forward, she asked me to promise never to pick them again so every one could see them. This painting has heavy texture, many layers and pops of red oxide. The sides are unfinished. Gloss varnish.

Painting is meditation. There is a tension between reality and the abstract and I am continuously fascinated by the beauty it creates. When painting realism, I struggle to loosen my control and inverse, when painting abstractly, I desperately seek the familiar. I find the complexity and process of building layers, texture and lines the most satisfying. At the end, perhaps only a suggestion of the original layer remains, but understand that even those layers that are unseen, are a part of the foundation. The painting can not exist without them. I have been painting for more than 20 years now and still have yet to imagine that I know anything about painting. What I do know is my soul and how I feel in this world. A lot of my work is colored by it. I am in the communications field and a graphic designer by day. Painting is a decompression and translator of my inner world. Every painting has a story that reveals a small glimp into a moment or period of my life. I work with molding pastes, inks, acylics, charcoals, oil mediums and glazes.
