Pradeep Jayatunga's art is about what may be called "schematism" for want of better descriptive terms, as in the arts of children, African wood carvings, Amerindian totem carvings, and carved wooden pillars of house Tambarans or men's houses of the Sepik in Papua New Guinea. Art has always been a natural extension of who I am. A self-taught artist with a passion spanning over four decades, I began painting in early childhood and have continued to nurture this creative voice throughout my life. My work is deeply rooted in personal emotion and societal observation, blending the visible with the visceral. Painting is not merely a medium for me—it's a form of therapy, a way to process the world and communicate thoughts that often defy words. Over the years, I’ve explored a broad spectrum of human experience through my art—sometimes intimate and introspective, other times critical and reflective of the world around me. My paintings tell stories: some born from lived moments, others from contemplative silences. The figures, forms, and moods I capture are impressions—snapshots of societal realities, inner tensions, and the spiritual resonance of everyday life. Though I spent over a decade in the IT sector and later helmed a creative journey as an entrepreneur in the apparel industry, my return to painting marks a homecoming. Now devoted fully to my art, I embrace the freedom to paint without compromise, exploring themes that resonate with personal depth and cultural context. I have been honored to participate in numerous local and international exhibitions and artist camps, including the George Keyt Foundation’s “Young Contemporaries” and international events organized by the Goethe Institute. These experiences have expanded my perspective and reinforced my belief in the power of visual language to transcend boundaries. As I continue this artistic journey, I remain committed to using my brush not only as a tool of expression but also as a mirror to society—reflecting its beauty, its conflicts, and its untold narratives.
