Variety Brown is a London-based artist whose current focus is portraiture. Their Black Icons Series consist of iconic portraits predominantly of individuals who contributed to the Civil Rights Movement, Music, Sport, and Entertainment Industries. These pieces are painted on canvas using black and white acrylic paint with inspiration having been taken from black and white photography as well as to add a classic feel. Pride is taken in the contrast displayed using conflicting colours, highlighting shadows and light. Portraying an accurate and specific expression is also pursued. The end result is intended to display a strong and bold image that draws you in and furthermore sheds insight into the background of the icon.
